We are a space-limited program for up to 18 emerging artists and talented undergraduates who will perform a fully-staged operatic role with a professional, reduced chamber orchestra in historic theaters and concert halls. We also take on two stage-director's apprentices and occasionally, other musical soloists. In particular, musicians interested in the baroque are encouraged to apply. Situated in stunning Orvieto just over an hour north of Rome, we provide world-class training with a faculty to performer ration of nearly 1:2 alongside intensivevoice lessons, coachings & masterclasses, dramatic preparation, "recitativo intensives," character study,Italian language study, & postural-alignment (Feldenkrais Method-based) lessons.
Singers & Stage Apprentices receive upwards of 20 HOURS of individualized coaching and lessons!! Our tuition includes room AND board* in an intimate, friendly, lively, supportive setting where singers and faculty dine together nightly just paces away from the inspiring Duomo.

In 2019, every singer performed roles in Cosi fan tutte, by W.A. Mozart, or in the chamber opera Il giuoco del quadriglio, by Antonio Caldara. We encourage students to take on an additional cover role in the alternate opera, or at least an understudy, so as to add to their repertoire & resumé, time permitting. The Mozart opera was performed at the Teatro degli Avvaloranti, pictured above, and the chamber opera concluded a larger concert of arias and scenes with the entire academy, students and faculty together, upstairs at the Government Palace (Sala Unità del Palazzo Comunale, go to "photos" page) of Orvieto. Other concerts included an outdoor concert of solo arias and scenes with the Orvieto in Fiore festival, as well as performances in collaboration with longstanding local festivals such as Orvieto diVino and the Festival di Arte e Fede at the Duomo. We're also delighted to be working with the professional musicians of Orvietarmonico and other such colleagues for our chamber concerts and opera performances.
Our voice faculty, conductors, and pianists work with joy and dedication, and willingly become partners and colleagues for life with participants. Singers are housed together with faculty in the Hotel Posta and supported by a wonderful, generous, multi-lingual hotel crew. Our program encourages friendship, intimacy, and collegiality, emphasized by regular meals together with faculty and performers, a beautiful living environment, mind-body-spirit classes, & group lectures/conversations that foster personal development and comfort with one another. Auditions can be completed by video, or in person by appointment in Chicago or Los Angeles when possible. We are delighted to answer your phone calls! Last season we developed a relationship over the phone with each singer before the 2019 program even started so as to understand their goals for summer and beyond. Featured performance repertoire beyond operatic roles is decided in tandem with students and their regular voice coaches. Summer training is a huge commitment in terms of energy and funds; we take the time to speak with you to ensure that we are the right program for every singer that we accept, and that we can establish a supportive and happy group dynamic in advance!
Students will coach their Italian repertoire with Italian and international faculty and work in accelerated fashion on language and theater skills. Yoga and a mind-body-awareness series based on the Feldenkrais Method and up-to-date performance psychology, as well as a lunch lecture series on life as a performer are also included in our program. For 2-3 select singers applying after appropriate roles are filled, we also offer the position of "concert artist" to a soprano(s) who will be staged in larger scenes alongside faculty as featured artists. Concert artists automatically receive partial scholarships.

Orvieto ~ View From The Side
The Vocal Academy of Orvieto and Opera Argentario are programs founded in collaboration with the local governments of Orvieto and Panicale (interior of the theater featured above). We aspire to foster international collaboration and language exchange, and during our inaugural year hosted students and faculty from 6 countries! Orvieto is on the short list for inclusion as a UNESCO world heritage site, and an equally beautiful if smaller Panicale is full of cultural and architectural gems, not least, a jewel of an opera theater. Our hotel is situated in the most prestigious part of Orvieto off a small square proximate to amenities, parks, a trail for walking or jogging, a small supermarket with organic/gluten-free choices, and major historical sites such as the Duomo and primary museums.
Italy is the birthplace of opera, with 400 years of history and development still circulating richly in its cities and culture. The Vocal Academy of Orvieto is a truly international festival, owing much to the host city of Orvieto, as well as to the arrival of faculty and students from Italy and beyond.
