Italian the Congiuntivo Presente (subjunctive tense) is a currently used form. Rather than stating facts, it expresses doubt, possibility, uncertainty, or personal feelings. It can also express emotion, desire, or suggestions.
The Subjunctive is a mode frequently used to connect (check the Italian verb "congiungere," to congiugate) subordinate clauses to main clauses featuring verbs that express opinions, wishes, hope and expectations, assumptions, emotions, feelings, doubts, hypotheses and so on. In other words, the Subjuncitve marks any subjective and personal approach, and consists of four tenses. In addition to that, it has to be used following some conjunctions that specifically require it.
First of all, let’s have a look at some conjunctions:
  • prima che (before)
  • affinché, perché (so that, in order that)
  • nel caso che, qualora (in case, if)
  • nonostante, sebbene, malgrado (even though, although)
  • a meno che, tranne che (unless)
  • a condizione che, a patto che (as long as)
  • in modo che, cosicché (in order that, so that)
And here you have some useful examples:
Italian-English
Dobbiamo partire prima che faccia tardi. We must leave before it gets late.
Ti aiuto affinché tu superi l’esame.I’m helping you so that you can pass the exam.
Non canto a meno che voi non cantiate con me.I don’t sing unless you sing with me.
Andrò alla festa a condizione che tu venga con me.I will go to the party as long as you come with me.
Bevo il caffè nonostante sia freddo.I drink the coffee even though it is cold.
